Title of the
Project: HELP FOR DISABLED CHILDREN Location: Slavonski Brod ,Croatia

Ownership of the project site (circle one): We do alone our project.
Objectives of the Project To support children and young people with disabilities; including intellectual impairments, motor disabilities, educational difficulties, emotional problems, (ADHD, hyperactivity autism). There are disabilities children and youth (mentally retarded, motor disabled, emotional disturbances, learning problems, behaviour problems (ADHD, hyper-activity),and autism.
Detailed description of the Project Each individualised program is reviewed regularly to ensure its quality, effectiveness and student’s complete satisfaction. There are about 60-70 children included in our programmes ranging from 0-24 years old. 3 special teachers are in charge of the following activities: One works with a group of preschool children helping them prepare for attending school, with special attention paid to their perceptive, intellectual, grapho-motor and social abilities. Their work is both group and individual, including the instructions to parents how to eliminate negative symptoms, and guidance of both parents and their children to the appropriate psycho-social development. The special teacher is aided by a nurse. Another special teacher deals with the development of speech, improving speaking abilities, eliminating speech difficulties. The third special teacher works with school children included in the regular school system, but with difficulties in learning. Besides giving them direct aid,i.e. helping such children in learning, their parents are also instructed how to help. The number of such children has considerably increased lately, due to very extensive curricula, which are too difficult for children with development difficulties. Our intention is to help such children remain in the regular school system, but with curricula reduced to their intellectual abilities. Our special teachers permanently cooperate with schools and other professionals.
Playschool is lead by a Croatian language and literature teacher who also volunteers in the guidance centre for the children-war victims (PTSP). Playschool is attend by both healthy children and children with difficulties of various ages (pre-school to primary school). The children are taught through a variety of activities, including playing, singing, drawing, reciting, modelling. Group work is use in this activity.
Physical therapy is provided by a qualified physical therapist who works with babies only a few months old to children until the age of the tree. Bobath therapy is used in motor-defects, while early development gymnastics is practised in neurorisk children to prevent (or, at least, minimize those already development) defects. Parents are also instructed how to help their children with motor exercises. The therapist is aided by a nurse.
We are also guidance centre (counselling): a) Led by a paediatrician-for infants to preschool children. The parents are instructing how to care for their children to enable them normal psycho-motor development, and in the recognition of possible deviations in their child’s development. The paediatrician also advice regarding specialized medical instructions, and gives the instructions, on feeding and certain rehabilitation procedures. The paediatrician is aiding by a nurse. b) A psychiatrist works with behaviour’s problems children and their parents. c) A lawyer gives free advices to parents; d) A social worker works with parents. The parents come seeking help to solve the problems connected to their social status (often very low in many families), different ways of satisfying their needs marriage problems. They also come to share the negative attitudes from the community that they experience; together with request about how to deal with prejudice towards themselves and their children.
Some parents of handicapped children (fathers) have PTSP (post-traumatic stress) as consequence of participating in the war in Croatia. These problems are psycho-social and they influence at relationship in the family and especially towards wife and children. In order to decrease existing problems with these fathers work psychiatrist and social worker. We have to say that some fathers do not accept institutional help, and some of them still didn’t solve their invalid pensions. The social worker tries to solve their financial problems by getting the help from social welfare. All these problems make difficult to the whole family with handicapped child. Our Personnel try to help that kind of family. Institutional solving of these problems is very slow and often don’t give good results. (The members of our expert’s tam try to help that kind of family. Institutional solving of these problems is very slow and often don’t give good results. We usually have to ask for help the donors from abroad because the institutions from Croatia don’t support the associations dealing with these problems).
Families will also be informed about their human rights. Our association and parents are prepared to stand up the fight together with governmental institutions for equal rights and equal opportunities of children and youth with disability in a civic society.
Expected Project Results and Performances Indicators: Performance indicators and results are based on medical, psychological, social and pedagogical aspects’ including:-
